MERMEN

Michael C Hsiung is an artist based out of LA, and is characterized by his rather large mustache, which he describes as one of the last remaining Asian beards today.

I first saw Michael’s illustrations in a ‘zine that a friend in Australia had. I loved the drawings and their cheeky humor, so I tried to track down a copy to call my own, but to my disappointment, it was sold out…

Recently I found out that Michael lived in LA, so I tracked him down to propose an art swap, which he said yes to. And a couple of weeks later, I got the best surprise in the mail… Michael had sent an awesome screen-print featuring his Mermen. It’s red card-stock with aqua ink is amazing, and always makes me smile when I see it! My husband and I are so stoked to have this new addition on our wall.

Feeling excited and inspired, I set to return the favor. I used a lovely traditional Kimono fabric from Japan which has a similar pattern to the textures that Michael uses to draw hair. Since he is such an awesome character himself, I decided to create a plush character of him and his mustache, and this is what I came up with!

Art Swaps are a great way to connect with creative friends around you… I highly recommend it!
