Inspiration: Sharks Teeth/DIY Shark Tooth Necklace by Guest Blogger Erica of City Meets the Shore
Coming from a long line of fisherman in my family, I had grown up collecting sharks teeth and making all kinds of jewelry out of them. Ever since the launch of Givenchy’s S/S 2012 collection fit for a mermaid, shark’s teeth have become a huge trend again, adorning bracelets, necklaces, earrings and anything else. I’ve wanted to try this DIY for a while, inspired by Givenchy’s collection and also to give a more mature spin on the jewelry I used to make as a kid.
What You’ll Need:
Sharks tooth
Chain (About 32 inches or longer depending on how long you want your necklace to be )
Pliers
Fishing Wire (Not Shown)
Ruler (Not Shown)
Ring Connector
I wanted to use the biggest sharks tooth I could find possible, but it’s almost impossible to come across real ones at that size in my price range. As an alternative, I ordered a replica of one off of eBay for 10 bucks. I chose one that was about 3’ 3/4” but you could even go bigger or smaller if you’d like.
Using the pliers, I cut off about a six inch portion of the chain. The biggest the links the better, that way you can just connect and disconnect them if you have to use more or take out more. This is also going to vary depending on how large your sharks tooth is.
Connect the chain to make a circle then put it into a sideways 8 shape. Once you do that, you’ll be able to slip the chain over the top of the sharks tooth.
After this is done, you’ll notice the chain isn’t going to stay on by itself. Cut about eight inches of the fishing wire and make a knot through the two sides of the chain on the back of the pendant and cut the extra fishing wire down. This will keep the chain in place when you wear it and the fishing wire will go unnoticed since it’s clear.
Once you’ve completed that step, attach the connector ring to one of the links at the top of the sharks tooth. You can either reconnect the links in the original chain that you used for the hold piece or I just used an even longer chain I found in my jewelry box. and here’s the finished product!
